So...disaster happens, and you need to evacuate. Like we have two evacuation routes and two meeting places, we want to be planning for multiple routes. The way that you get to and from places you spend the most amount of time at during an emergency may not be available, open, or there might be road closures, so have multiple routes. I use my GPS for a lot of things now, but if that's not working, I have maps in the back of my car from AAA--it gives me the chance to navigate multiple routes to get to where I need to go. If where I'm going happens to be a shelter...The Red Cross is mandated to provide shelters in disaster--that's what we do--anyone can stay at a Red Cross shelter. While we will have food and a place for you to sleep, we will not necessarily have your medications or contact information and papers that are important to you. Prepping yourself for having to stay in a shelter...you want to have any important information that you and your family need, any medications that your family needs to take--you should have at least ten days' worth of medications on hand in your disaster kits--because doctors, pharmacies--those are not going to be readily accessible. At Red Cross shelters, you'll find food and a place to stay, but any additional items that you would want to have--comfort items for kids; that might be a comfortable toy or a blanket...Make life as comfortable as you possibly can because a shelter isn't home, but it might be a great place for you to stay after an emergency if you need it.
