If you’re thinking about putting food in an emergency kit, you can go two ways – you can either go to the market and buy stuff that your family is comfortable with – peanut butter, tuna, that kind of thing. In the event that you do that though, you have to be very careful, because there are expiration dates on that. So peanut butter, for example, last a year and 18 months. So you have to remember to make sure to replace it. The other thing about buying food from the market is I want to make sure that you don’t buy things you’re not comfortable with. Like don’t go and buy a 5 pound jar of beef jerky if you guys don’t eat beef. It’s just going to go to waste. And then the other thing you have to be concerned about is where you store it and how you store it, because you want it to be in a pretty much of controlled climate. You don’t want to keep it outside where it gets really hot and really cold. Inside your pantry is a great place for that kind of food. But the other alternative is just to go and get food that’s actually made for an emergency situation or dehydrated food. And those foods have a 3 to 5 year shelf life. You can get the emergency food at any type of army/navy surplus store, camping stores have it. There’s tons of places online that you can also buy emergency food.
