You may notice if you read the ingredients of formula – which can be a little scary as is, because there’s a lot of technical sounding names that are not the most comforting to a new parent – one of the scariest ones though is one we’re all very familiar with which is corn syrup. Now the form that they’re in formula is usually corn syrup solids. Remember, this is not the same thing as high fructose corn syrup. They are both sugar derivatives of corn, but they’re not the same. And high fructose corn syrup goes through a completely different process, it’s way sweeter than corn syrup solids. The reason they have to use corn syrup solids is that they need some sort of carbohydrate in the formula and this is the one that they’ve decided to use. Brest milk has carbohydrates and sugar just like formula, it’s just that it’s lactose and it’s coming from the mother and it’s natural. That doesn’t mean that it processes in the body any differently. And there’s really nothing to be scared about seeing corn syrup solids on your formula can.
