Following the delivery of a child, you will need to see a doctor again for a follow up. If you had a c-section, you need to be seen two weeks after the delivery to look the incision and make sure there are no signs of wound infection. At six weeks, both the c-section patients and the vaginal delivery patients should come to the doctors office for a complete check up. This is the time where all of your concerns need to be addressed. If you have questions about the delivery of a child, ask your physician. If you have questions about breastfeeding, symptoms of postpartum blues or depression, questions about your bleeding or pelvic pain. Discuss that with your doctor. Your doctor will review with you, the support system that you have in place and to make sure that you are aware of exercises that will restore your pelvic floor. They will encourage you to continue taking prenatal vitamins and possibly do blood tests to check for anemia, diabetes, and thyroid dysfunction. A complete examination is done of your breasts to make sure there are no masses, which can be a sign of plugged milk ducts or even something more serious. In addition, a pelvic exam is done to make sure you've healed. A pap smear is done to make sure that you don't have precancerous cells, and an abdominal exam to make sure your uterus is contracted.
