So often in my office I have parents come in for the 9-month visit where they have babies that have been sleeping all throughout the night from 4-5 months on, and all of a sudden their child is up again every few hours. It tends to coincide with the time that children develop the skill to be able to pull up to a stand in their crib. So children wake up in the middle of the night, they pull themselves up to a stand in their crib, and then they realize, uh, I'm standing up, what do I do? How can I sleep standing up? And then they cry out for mom and dad. My advice to parents is to raise that self reliant independent child who can tackle problems on their own, to let your child figure it out. They'll figure it out very soon that if they let go of that crib, they'll sit back down, they can lay themselves back down and get back to sleep. If you run into the room, pick them up and put them back down, you're giving them the message that they need you to go back to sleep, not that they can figure out how to go back to sleep on their own.
