How to Protect Your Baby’s Skin in the Summer

Protect Your Baby’s Skin

It's certainly necessary for the new parents to care for their baby but the summer season calls for extra care and nourishment due to the escalating temperature.

The soaring temperatures can make your baby uncomfortable and irritable as their skin is highly susceptible to skin problems. One must ensure that the baby is comfortable at all times. Look for signs like flushed cheeks, damp hair, sweating, diaper rash, or a heat rash to know if your baby is too hot.

The harsh weather can also bring in skin problems for newborn babies. It is preferred that you use products recommended by doctors to keep the baby’s skin soft and supple at all times. Following are some tips to protect and nourish your baby’s skin health in Summer.

Refreshing bath

Bathing your baby regularly will assist in keeping their skin clean and fresh. Babies tend to sweat in this hot season so bathe them at least twice a day if your baby loves having a bath, as it would assist in removing sweat.

Check the temperature of the water, it should be lukewarm and not too cold. A fresh bath will encourage your baby to sleep comfortably. Pay attention to all the folds in the baby’s skin like the armpits, neck, etc.

You can go for a refreshing baby wash that has infused watermelon and neem extracts to keep the baby’s skin healthy and cool. Pat the baby’s skin dry well afterward.

Talcum powder

Talcum powder works wonders for some babies while others may develop rashes. You should discontinue using it if you notice any rashes. Using powder after bath and before bedtime might assist in getting relief from prickly heat and in healing rashes.

Prickly heat is a term that refers to a skin concern in which tiny, itchy bumps might appear on the skin due to the soaring temperatures. Excessive itching and sweating can be easily managed by powders infused with vetiver and neem. Keep the powder away from the baby during application to make sure he doesn’t inhale any of it.

Hydrating baby lotions

Baby’s skin might be allergic to the wipes and lotions that are used in summers. These allergies might include dryness, rough patches, or irritation. Moisturize the skin well with the recommended hydrating lotions for babies.

You can opt for a soothing lotion that is calamine-based and enriched with natural ingredients like aloe vera, mustard oil, and nutgrass oil, courtesy of Pierre Michel Beauty. Aloe is good for hydrating and moisturizing the skin whereas nutgrass and mustard oil assist in calming the itching and rashes.

The baby must be hydrated with formula or breast milk to avoid dehydration. Ensure that the room’s temperature is suitable for your baby. You should consider medical advice if the baby has severe rashes or has a fever.

Sun protection gear

UVA, UVB, and infrared rays can be extremely harmful to babies as they can lead to long-term damage as well as skin burns. You should consider going for products that have been dermatologically tested for the babies and are suitable to use.

The right kind of sun protection will protect the baby from harmful rays. You can opt for sunscreens that are water-resistant so the protective layer doesn’t go away when your baby is exposed to moisture.

It is preferred that you must check the PA rating mentioned on the product. A rating below 4 would mean that it is not suitable for your baby’s skin. Sunblocks are available in creamy and spray variants.

Sprays can work for babies who don’t like much touch. The creamy variant might take some time to apply but it provides optimum protection for the sensitive areas.

Avoid dermatitis triggers

Contact dermatitis refers to the allergic reaction on a baby’s skin that has been caused by some external factor. Pay attention to common irritants and allergens, including saliva, lotions, urine, perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, some metals, and latex.

The allergic reaction is followed by dry and cracked skin with redness. To avoid such situations use dye-free moisturizers and dress your baby in loose clothing and hats with a wide brim.

Summary

The key to enjoying sunny days with your baby is to keep them comfortable. Keep in mind to keep their skin dry, out of the Sun, and clean. Above all, you should consider using products infused with natural ingredients and free from parabens, alcohol, etc so that it is safe and gentle on their skin.
