Certainly, coming from a standpoint of parenting for peace, you don't want to spank your child. First of all, any short-term compliance that you get from spanking is simply rooted in your child's fear of you. That is not a good foundation for a family, and certainly, not going to put that child into that optimal growth mode in feeling secure and safe. The statistics are, spanked toddlers and children grow up to hit their partners and engage in more domestic violence. Toddlers who are spanked are more oppositional. They are not well-behaved. Even the statistics bear out any benefits of spanking. There is really nothing positive to be gained from spanking. The old "spare the rod, spoil the child," saying, really applies, it refers to the shepherd's rod. When you take the sheep, you take the rod and just guide them back. You take the child and you gently correct their mistake. You don't hit them.
