Celiac Disease, as a pediatric gastroenterologist in training, seem to be rarely thought of and rarely diagnosed. In this day and age, it's not. It is very commonly diagnosed. If you look in the old textbooks, you see the very ornery child with a pot belly, thin extremities, not gaining weight, with oily or fatty stools and saying they have malabsorption issues. This child has typical symptoms of Celiac Disease and it's usually an infant or toddler. However, in this day and age, we now know that Celiac Disease can present at any age, not just toddlers. Anybody that has a first degree relative or close relative who has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, who has any unexplained medical problems, whether it is unexplained anemia, unexplained fractures or unexplained constipation, problems gaining weight, or even growing in pediatrics. There is stunted growth. this is a child or person should be considered or screened for Celiac Disease. There are reliable ways to screen for Celiac Disease. There is a simple blood test. I would recommend this to be considered in anybody for Celiac Disease. This would be an important step for the family to do.
