Today smart kids or maybe smart aleck kids maybe say why should I do the chores when we have a housekeeper that does it and does it better. They make a good point. And the truth is I am less concerned with having the children vacuum the house or when we are trying to get off to school in the morning stop to make their bed. But it is important the kids do learn responsibility. It is important that they learn the lessons having chores can teach them. So we sort of change the chores a little bit. They can be responsible for taking care of the dog. We have responsibility around the house for recycling. There are different responsibilities but they need some responsibility. Also, today kids have opportunities to do a lot more volunteer work. Some of our children volunteer at a senior home. They volunteer at a hospital. I have them work around the office. So it is important that they learn responsibility that they get from doing chores but the idea of doing the chores around the house is not particularly important to us as long as they learn it somewhere.
