Grooming is a series of techniques used by sex offenders to manipulate minors for the purposes of sexual exploitation. Frequently, it begins with frequently innocuous encounters with a victim. They can come on anywhere from a social networking site to a video game site where the suspect will pay unusual attention to the victim and then gradually introduce flattery and build a rapport with the victim and an emotional bond. Gradually, as a relationship of trust develops, the suspect will introduce sexually explicit concepts to test out whether the victim is prepared for that. If the victim shows some interest in it, the suspect may then escalate the conversation and talk about possibly sexual fantasies, and maybe even sending pornography, and ultimately child pornography. The suspect may also use the grooming process to induce the female victim to send pictures of herself, first innocuous photos of her face and maybe upper body and then more sexually explicit pictures once the victim is prepared for exploitation. In the worst cases, actually, victims can be blackmailed by suspects. Suspects will threaten to release pictures that have previously been given by the victim unless a sexual encounter is arranged.
