In a community that values grades, in a country that values high stakes testing, one danger is that children will start to equate their grade or their test score with their intelligence. This is wrong and harmful. Those grades and test scores are snapshots of one moment in time. What you know now and what you were able to show on those test, they have very little to say about how your intelligence might grow over time or your skills might grow over time. With passion, dedication and perseverance, It is very important that children not equate their grades and test scores with their intelligence or their potential to learn.

Carol S. Dweck, PhD, is a leading researcher in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford. Her research focuses on why students succeed and how to foster their success.
