It's really easy for us to do the same thing with our spouses at home, night after night. So I think to have a date night at home, which is a huge costs savings if you don't have to hire a babysitter, is a really fun idea. The first thing you have to do is proclaim that it's date night. Set that intention. Tonight, we are not just going to watch tv, tonight is date night. That includes getting the kids to bed early with a specific bed time, so that you have enough time. And planning an activity that is not your normal range of activities. I think that no screen time is really important for date night. So I am not a fan of the movie night. I would pick a board game, maybe cooking together making something more elaborate than what you normally do. Or planning something,w hether it's a home decor project, like changing around the furniture. Something that really lets you connect and not just each person is sort of emerced in their own screen. One more thing about date night - this is for dads - if you want this date to go anywhere, I really suggest turning in early. The earlier you go to bed, the better your chances are. So that's my recipe for an at home date night.
