Parents often want to know how they can get their parents or other caregivers to respond to their child the way they do. I always like to let parents know that it's helpful for children to know that there are differences in the world, that everyone doesn't respond the exact same way. And as long as no one is physically harming your child, it's okay for that to happen. But it's also important when there are times when something specific that you want your parents to do? So I say, it's always best to model exactly what it is you want. So for example, if your child goes to touch something, let's say to touch grandma's glasses, grandma might come in and say, no, no, no, that's bad. No, no, no, that's bad. And what I encourage parents to do is come alongside grandma and say, Brody, those are grandma's glasses. Grandma uses those glasses to read stories. Can you go find your book so grandma can read you the book about the doggie? And so the child gets excited about that and goes to find the book. Grandparents are always surprised to see how well a child can respond that. And so it teaches them something new, as well.
