Some parents, be it there because the mom's going back to work, or because they want to give the opportunity to the Dad to feed once in a while, decide to breastfeed and bottle feed. When a parent comes to me and ask questions about that, I always ask them what their overall goal is. So if a mom is only going to be nursing and bottle feeding until she goes back to work in a couple of months, there's probably no problem. She'll probably make it a couple of months. If a mom's really intent on getting the baby to do it a year, and is going to supplement, it might be a little bit harder for that mom to supplement. And then, what is she supplementing with? Is she going to pump and then, give the baby her own milk, or is she going to supplement with formula. If she's going to pump her own milk, she'll probably be pumping at the same intervals when she's not with her baby, that the baby would normally have breastfed. So her milk supply will stay pretty steady. If she is going to supplement with formula when she's away from her baby, her milk supply will most definitely drop. And she might have a harder time keeping the supply up. So overtime, the baby might get more and more formula to make up for the milk that she is not producing, because she is not pumping, in addition to the supplementing.
