Using praise is a great way to encourage a child and repeat positive expected behaviors. However, it can be a little bit like salt in cooking. A little too little and you can't taste it, a little too much and you can ruin the entire dish. Remember the three A's when using praise with children. Number one is appropriate. Appropriate praise means that you are really looking at the process of what a child is doing, not just the product. You are looking at the effort, creativity and how much a child values the process and not only what they are putting out. The second A is for amount. It needs to be a sprinkle of praise and not too much. Children soon become immune to all the watered down praise if they are hearing it too much. The last A is for authentic. It really needs to come from deep down and that you are delivering the praise, not that it is a mundane thing.
