One of the most important things we can recognize about a behaviorally challenging kid is that he's not always challenging. He's only sometimes challenging. I mean we often talk about behaviorally challenging kid like they're always behaviorally challenging, but no behaviorally challenging kid is always challenging. Every challenging kid is only sometimes challenging. Very important for us to figure out when those sometimes are. I call those sometimes unsolved problems. Now other people have other names for those sometimes that are roughly synonymous. Some people call them antecedents. Some people call them triggers. I call them unsolved problems because it makes it crystal clear what our role now is in the life of this behaviorally challenged kid. First we have to figure out what skills he's lacking. Then we have to figure out the specific conditions in which those lagging skills are getting in the kid's way. Those are the unsolved problems. And then, what do you do with an unsolved problems? You solve it. Preferably collaboratively and proactively. But if there's any good news about behaviorally challenging kids, it's that they're not always behaviorally challenging. They're only sometimes challenging. And it's when they are challenging that gives us a great deal of information about what's getting in their way and what problems need to be solved so we can help them not be so challenging anymore.
