Very often in my clinic I'm asked to evaluate a child with a leaky gut. And what is this leaky gut? That's a hard one to conceptualize. But really the gut is not working properly, both in the digestive process where the proteins are not being broken down properly. And because the gut has a certain degree of inflammation, it's not as tight as it ought to be, and some of these proteins are actually able to leak into the blood stream. And the immune system does not like foreign proteins. So it recognizes your heart tissue, your lung tissue, your thyroid tissue, and does not mount an immune response. But when an abnormal protein comes in like a bacteria or virus, it's supposed to destroy it. Well what happens if food proteins are leaking into the bloodstream? The immune system will mount a response. And when that happens there's a chronic infection in the body that affects the brain and very often what we see is a very cloudy brain, a child who's dull, not focused, and certainly language can be impacted. If we can heal the digestive tract, heal the gut, aid digestion, and remove the offending foods, then the parent tells me, I've got some language now, he's more present, he's more participatory in our daily environment and he's just really enjoying being with his family. So it's very important to treat the leaky gut.
