Here are some tips for homeschooling a child. First, be relaxed. Don’t be so rigid or rigidly adhering to your schedule that you lose the joy of this experience and the flexibility that comes with the opportunity at hand. If it’s 10:20 and your daughter is still enjoying the art project, or still really writing that essay with a lot of passion, don’t look at your clock and say, “You know what? We’re supposed to be doing math now.” So be relaxed, be flexible. Don’t take it too seriously. Don’t engage in the power struggles about the work. Make sure that you set it up in such a way that you have your child’s agreement about what you’re going to accomplish and make it reasonable. And make sure that you have fun. Take advantage of this amazing opportunity if you’re homeschooling your child to go to museums, to go to outings, to do hands-on experiments in science and build things and really, make the most of it, because it’s a wonderful chance to really connect with your child and learn alongside them.
