I attempted a home birth and labored at home for about 16 hours. I quickly got to 8 centimeters and 9.5 centimeters and for whatever reason, we weren’t able to get that extra half centimeter. My midwives – being the cautions ones – decided to have a little discussion and they thought we might want to move to the hospital where you would have Pitocin in case your uterus is getting exhausted. I physically felt fine and emotionally was all ready to do this at home, but their concern was my uterus had been working for 16 hours really hard and they wanted to make sure it didn’t exhaust itself. If it did, that would mean a caesarian section and none of us wanted that. So we made the difficult decision, decided to go to the hospital where Pitocin was available. And I’ve got to say I walked myself in, I was having nothing to do with a wheelchair or any of that and I know that actually my long walk to my room had a lot to do with getting my final half centimeter of dilation. We’ve got to the room, literally 5 minutes later I felt my son’s head drop. I was fully dilated, I was ready to give birth and I didn’t even need the Pitocin. But we were there and it was smart to be there.
