Pregnant women contract toxoplasmosis, which is a protozoan organism from cats and also from eating undercooked meats. Outdoor cats who are out in the environment chasing rats have a tendency to have toxoplasmosis, and can transmit it to anyone who comes into contact with them. The disease is not serious for the mother, but it can be extremely serious for the baby. People who have cats can be tested to see if they’ve had toxoplasmosis, because one can only get toxoplasmosis once, and if somebody’s already been exposed, it’s of no danger to the pregnancy.
