Transcription:
Gender selection usually is performed in the landscape of family balancing. For example, you may have had 2 boys and want a girl or vice versa. And there are essentially multiple ways that have been attempted, many of them futile. One of the ways that was touted as being an effective route for having a particular gender was to have intercourse around certain times of ovulation. A more scientific approach has been to spin the sperm. And the theory behind that is that the sperm is spun and the lighter sperm, the y-bearing sperm that would ultimately result in a boy would go in a certain fraction of the specimen and the x in another one. The problem is that both of these options do not work. There may have been some poorer studies that showed an enhancement in the likelihood from sperm spinning to a particular gender, but these studies have subsequently been disproven. There have been other techniques of sperm separation which included a machinery called microsort. And it was a technology by which there was a probe added to the particular chromosome of interest in that sperm. It was effective, and it's still currently being used for avoided x-linked diseases. However, it has not been permitted by the FDA for gender selection. So the the only thing that we have in our armament today to allow a family to balance their family and have a particular gender is in vitro fertilization with pre-implantation genetic screening, where we assess cells within the embryo and are then able to tell the parents with 98% accuracy if that embryo is a normal boy or a normal girl. It is a very powerful technology.
