Some mothers of twins may be more prone to postpartum depression for a number of reasons. There's a phenomenon called, "the delayer boom," which relates to groups of college educated women, in their mid-30's, who have opted to delay having children. Women in their mid-30's are more likely to have twins or multiples because of hormonal shifts in their bodies, as well as, needing to resort to reproductive technologies. Because these women feel guilty about having delayed their decision, they may not feel comfortable articulating their feelings of disappointment and disillusionment about motherhood and about having twins. We need to help these women articulate these feelings. If these feelings go unexplored and unarticulated, depression can result.
