It's important that when we are talking about nutrition during pregnancy, that we focus, not so much on how much weight a mother is gaining, but we are focusing on what she is eating to gain that weight. A mom can be eating hamburger and pizza all day, and gain 15 pounds; where a mom might gain 40 pounds, who is eating a well-balanced diet. Protein is extremely important during pregnancy, as our bodies are made of proteins. Since we are building a body, it is really important that we have a high protein intake during pregnancy. The World Health Organization recommends that pregnant women get a minimum of 75 grams of protein a day. Additionally, things like amino acids, calcium, vitamins are all really important in building that baby.

Mandy Schutt

Doula & Hypnosis Instructor

Mandy Schutt was backpacking around the world when she decided that she wanted to become a doula. As she floated through the Amazon Pampas with two European midwives, she was immediately captivated by their birth stories and the culture of womanhood that they spoke of. Traveling on through South America, Europe, and Asia, she was able to witness motherhood in a different light than she had before. When she ran across the term, "doula" for the first time, she knew this was a name she wanted to claim for herself!

Mandy looks at a woman's ability to grow another life inside of her as nothing short of a miracle. She supports women in their efforts to discover this for themselves and know that the act of giving birth is more than just an isolated event in a mother's life, it is realization of an empowerment that many never realized existed. She gave birth to her daughter in 2009, which was the single most amazing event of her life. Mandy believes that women should birth where and how they are the most comfortable and secure. Her safe place was in her home with a midwife, her husband, a doula, hypnosis, and a gorgeous pool of pain-dissolving water!
