When to call poison control vs. 911

In general, if a child comes in contact with any poisonous substance, give us a call at Poison Control. However, if the child not breathing, having a seizure, or is unresponsive; these are reasons to bypass poison control and call 9-1-1 for the immediate medical emergency attention that the child will need. As a result, the child will then be taken to the hospital and poison control can get involved later on.

Cyrus serves as the Assistant Medical Director with the California Poison Control System and medical toxicology consultant for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Over 70% of the calls received at the center are able to stay at home and avoid a visit to the hospital, based on the over-the-phone support of the center.
