Dyslexia is a word that means someone who has difficulties learning how to read. Many times, people thought dyslexia meant that you turned letters around. Actually, we now know -- because you can look at the brain while it's reading -- that reading demands using many, many different parts of the brain. When you have to learn how to sound out a word. You have to be able to hear the sounds, hear the sounds in the right order, be able to hear a word and pull the sounds apart, put it back together, and be able to hear the sounds that map out on to those sounds. Dyslexia means, you can't do that. It doesn't mean you are turning letters around, that's a visual spatial problem. It means, can I sound out those words, pay attention to the meaning of the words, and understand how the information is organized. People with dyslexia primarily have difficulty sounding out words, but, many times, they understand when you speak to them. We teach them how to life the words off of the page, and then they learn very efficiently.
