My golden nugget parenting advice is that needs drive goals and goals drive services in an IEP. And that’s extremely important, because in order to advocate for your child, you must make sure that you have all the data to prove your child’s case. And that means having all the necessary assessments conducted and making sure that everything is looked at so that you can write good goals and objectives and therefore have appropriate services and placement. And if you don’t have all these things in place, it’s harder to make your case in terms of your child’s needs, because the school districts are broke these days and they’re not going to write a check for you just because you feel like your child is struggling in one area or another. Unfortunately, the burden is on the parents to prove your child needs whatever services you feel that they need. So you need to go out there and get the data and prove your child’s case.
