When I first started working in this field and I wrote in my book that this was mainly a female issue, what we know now is that that is not true. The reason that I thought that it was mainly female is because more females come into treatment. And I am a clinician so I deal with people who come into treatment. What we are finding now because we have better research on non-clinical populations. That is people who have never seen a therapist or do not go into treatment. We are finding that almost as many boys as girls are engaging in these behaviors. So one of the roads ahead of us, one of the things that we need to do is to be able to better identify boys who are engaging in these behaviors. We are not sure why we are not very good at identifying them. Maybe because boys do not tell us that they are engaging in them. It may be because we think that boys hurting themselves is just boys will be boys. So we need to figure out how to identify these kids so that we can get them into treatment earlier as well.
