It's important for parents, if they know their child is engaging in self-injurious behavior, it's really important to get professional help right away, at least for an assessment. The reason that is that the self-injury is not the problem. The self-injury is a coping strategy. It's very important to get help in identifying what that child is coping with. What are the problems? Actually being able to put voice to an emotion, to put labels, to put a word to the emotional states that they are in is very important down the road. The earlier they can learn about their emotional life and be able to identify it with words so they can tell us what they are thinking and feeling, as opposed to them having to show us, the better off that child is going to be emotionally as time goes on.
