I get this question all the time: credit card, debit card, which one's appropriate, which one's not. So credit cards just reinforce all the wrong things with the kid. Spend more than you have, gets them into the penalties and paying of interest and all of those things are not good for a kid. Debit card's a different story. If you have the money, then you can buy it. Great. There are actually debit cards out there for young people that send a text to a parent when they make a purchase. I think that's pretty interesting stuff because then, that gives you a conversation starter, "I saw that you bought this yesterday, why'd you do that and let's talk about it." So debit cards, if they're used properly as well, can be good for kids. I don't know about you as a parent, but I know I don't carry around a bunch of cash in my pocket anymore. That's really just not how we buy things so much. It's a card purchase most of the time. If not, it's buying something on the internet. So we need to teach our kids in a different way. So you need to reinforce with your kids that even though you're making a purchase with a card, that card is associated with money and doesn't have to be in your pocket in the form of coins and paper bills, but it's money associated when you're making that purchase. Once they understand that, they understand the value of a dollar.
