I first knew he was gay probably when he was only about 3. I know that sounds completely ridiculous, but from the time he was little, he played differently than the other kids. He always played more like a girl. When children are little, girls play a certain way and boys play a little rougher or play different. He always played like the girl. Then as he grew a little older, it just seemed very obvious to me. Just he didn’t want to do any sports. He wanted to do ballet. He once told me, “Mommy, I wanted to take skating classes,” then he goes, “But not for hockey.” He said, “For figure skating.” It was little things like that really just how his personality was. It was just very obvious, but even then, I would sometimes question it. I would think maybe he’s just creative or just little feminine, but because really I guess can’t know until someone knows and they come into their sexuality, but he was actually 9 when he told us. It was over dinner one night. He put his fork down and he asked us if we would still love him if he was gay. I just said, “Of course, knucklehead” and that was kind of it. The one thing that happened though that day was he changed and it’s like he got much more comfortable in who he was, because I think he knew that we loved him and we accepted him. He later asked me, he said, “Were you surprised?” I said, “No.” I said, “I always knew.” That’s when we first, I guess, knew for sure.
