I think one of the most challenging thing that my wife and I faced in raising our kids is when, one of our kids, was dating someone that we didn't approve of. It creates a great deal of angst for a mother and a father. You worry about the choices that your son or daughter are going to make. When they choose someone you don't approve of, it's very trying. One of the things we tried to do was to engage the young man or woman to talk to them, to get to know them. Often your son or daughter will be a roadblock to that occurring because they may sense you don't approve of the person. You really have to step into their relationship, without being intrusive, and do your best to try and engage the young man or woman. You need to engage your child. Ask your daughter, "Do you love this guy?" "Oh, I love him." "Really what is it about him you love? Explain it to me." Those conversations, as difficult as they are, will expose what the relationship is really all about. Hopefully, you'll be able to mirror back to your son or your daughter what it is that is failing in that relationship or what might be missing. Don't believe for a second you can stop that relationship from going forward. It will go forward. Be patient with the process. Give it time. You'll be able to open your son or daughter's eyes eventually.
