One of the more frequently asked questions of parent groups, particularly of high school kids is, "Is it okay to allow my child to drink in the home if I'm present? Is it okay to have a party where I allow drinking?" That is a frequent concern. My approach is no, it's not. If it's underage drinking, it's underage drinking. There's a reason that we have those rules and those guidelines. If we're to talk about the teenage brain, we know that the teenage brain is actively evolving and developing and vulnerable to destroy brain cells, alter ways of dealing through chemicals, whether that's drugs or alcohol. So we know that up to the age of 25 actually, that brain is actvely developing and they don't have the filters that allow them to understand when enough is enough, when it's time to say no, when it's time to pull back, they don't have that intrinsically built in yet. That's one of the reasons why we have that drinking age. I know that there's historical, there's political, there's legal aspects and ramifications. I'm not as concerned about that as I am with each individual kid and reasons why we don't want to allow drinking in the home.
