Bullying is a problem that now includes cyber bullying. 6 out of 10 kids who bully on the playground, also cyber bully. Then there is a group that is just cyber bullying. We used to think that the group of kids who cyber bully didn't have skills, would hide behind their computer, but would have technical skills, who were low on the totem pole. They would go back to the kids who bullied them. It's not so simple. It's still about social power, at times. It is also about getting attention. It's about a lot of different variables, so we can't lock in on one possible concept about power that we used to with regular bullying. The problem is that kids who cyber bully, have technology that makes us vulnerable. When kids do things that are mean or hurtful, they can touch a button and that message goes out into cyberspace. Kids don't have the brain understanding, at this level, to understand the consequences of their actions. Cyber bullying can be very hard because the legal issues surrounding it are not yet fully formed within the states. Understand this, if is on the internet, you can't really prove that your child didn't do it. Even if it was in a moment of frustration. We have to teach our kids about how to use the internet. My rules for my kids is, don't say anything on the internet that you wouldn't say to your grandmother with a smile. In that way, we reduce the risk. I also believe that having monitoring software on computers, so you understand what they are doing. Technology is a privilege, not a right. If they are not doing it right, you don't have to allow them access until they can show you they can do it right.
