Helping your kids stay private online is one of the most important things parents can do in a digital age. It's absolutely essential that parents help their kids set strong privacy settings on any social networks they're using. Beyond that, it's really important to talk to your kids about some essential privacy protecting skills. Self-reflect before you self-reveal. That means: think about the things that you're putting up online, think about the things that should remain private and what's ok to post publicly. Help your kids understand that everything that they put up online creates a digital footprint and that all adds up and can affect your kid's reputation. It's also really important for kids to understand that they need to protect their friends' reputation. Never put a picture or a video or a post up that may embarrass a friend. It's really hard for kids to understand that on the internet there are vast, invisible audiences who can view everything you're putting up, so if you put up a picture of yourself at a party, having a drink and your underage, that picture can eventually, potentially be found by an employer or at college admissions, so it's really important that kids really do think about the information that they're putting up on the internet and understand that all of that information may exist forever.
