Parents ask me, as the person who has spent many years with dealing with online crimes against children; what do I say to my kid? What about this boogey man that is out there? The reality is that boogey man does exist. What we have to do is make sure our kids realize that the stranger that we are communicating with online, is just that, a stranger. Not to provide too much personal information. The other thing that will happen is the online offender is going to try to trick this child into doing something. As they try to trick the child into doing something, it may start off as being something really small. Ask them to do something that is not the greatest thing, but it's not horrible. They'll ask, the next time, to do something a little bit more. The next time, a little more. They keep pushing the envelop more and more. When they do that, it's called grooming. The grooming process is just that; building a relationship with somebody and making them believe that they really care about them. Number one, strangers asking you to do something that you should never do. How do we stop that? The pressures are starting to build. The way you stop that is to teach your child to set parameters while they are calm. While they are calm, you talk about, "Would you ever do this?" "What if somebody asked you to do whatever?" Those kinds of questions, take your clothes of, touch yourself; seem so hard to ask your kid. The time to ask your kid is before somebody else does.
