How do you protect your preteen from damaging content online? I'm a big proponent of blockers, especially when the are in elementary and middle school. The content could be so subversive to them at such an early age, it's important that's blocked as much as possible. The problem here is, unless you are going to chain your kid to the bed, they are going to be exposed to the environment. They are going to be at other people's house. They are going to be at school. Most of the places they go will have blockers, as well. However, what I recommend is that if you are concerned about the parents, get to know them before your kids go over there. Try to see what kind of parent they are, if they are home the whole time, if they are keeping tabs on the kids. That will make you feel more comfortable going to their house. I've seen very few middle schoolers that are so techno savvy that they can disable blockers. However, as they get older, I think it's important for parents to take the blockers off. Then they are really going to be allocating their time to do things in other places that they are not allowed to do at home. Ultimately, you do want your kid under your roof.
