When you're hiring someone to come in to your home and help care for your children, there are few big things you wanna keep in mind. The first is that you want to make sure that any one you're hiring is eligible and entitled to work in the United States. The second is you want to make sure that you are comfortable with and understand your obligations, minimum wage and hour perspective. This includes making sure that you understand what the minimum wage is, what your overtime obligations are and whether there are meal and rest periods which what you need to comply. When it comes the time to pay your employees, you want to make sure that you are withholding proper taxes, that you are printing out pay stubs, that you are keeping track of timekeeping records, and that you are properly and timely paying taxes to the Federal and State Government. Finally, you wanna make sure that you understand your insurance obligations. If you have someone working in your home, you want to make sure that they are covered under your workers compensation plan. Sometimes, this is included in a homeowners policy, but you want to check with your insurance broker to make sure.
