The highly sensitive child is the child that feels everything. I often call it the princess and the pea syndrome. If you remember the fairy tale, the princess wakes up in the morning, and seven mattresses down, there is a pea. She wakes up like this, "There was a pea at the bottom of the mattress or there was a lump." These sensitive children truly feel things more than most of the population. As a parent, it's easy to get frustrated with a child like this. Often they will refuse to wear some clothes because they don't feel good. They will choose pants that might feel comfortable along the waist. They'll choose shirts just because they are soft. If you recognize that and honor it as a legitimate reaction to the world, you and your child will be much happier.
