Transcription:
A parent is the best advocate for their child. The parent has to be the best advocate for their child, because a child cannot advocate for themselves. No one else is going to do it, but the parent. The parent has to say, you know what? I have got to shake this off and deal with it like it is a business transaction. This is really hard. A therapist taught me this. Think of this like it is a business deal. How would you save this if it were a business deal going wrong? Once you pull the emotion out of it, you can fight for your kid. You have to always keep that in mind. You'll have that time where you sit down and you cry. It's going to happen. You and your spouse are either going to hold each other tight or you are going to be in fights with one another, but there will be times when you need to rescue each other. The first thing you need to do, before you can rescue each other, is rescue your child.

Dad

Jay Gaylen is the dad of a now 22-year old daughter who was diagnosed as a teen with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Bi-Polar II and ADHD. Jay and his wife, Renu, adopted Joslyn from Thailand. The process started when Joslyn was just nine months old. It took nearly two years to complete the adoption process — a good reason why Joslyn is a RAD kid. They sought help from numerous resources before discovering NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Jay began lecturing for NAMI’s Parents and Teachers as Allies program while being trained to teach the Family to Family and Basics courses.
