Helping children to find meaning in live and to cultivate purpose, are probably the most essential thing that parents need to do, because it is not those essential aspects of life are not widely available outside of the family. First, you as a parent, must be committed to some meaning because there is no more salient impact on the child than having a role model, than having someone who has meaning in something or wants to accomplish something important for their life. Once you have those and express it without becoming preachy, just acting it out, that's the essential thing. The more you expose them to exemplars and history and society now, that would help them cultivate purpose and expecting a lot from them. Giving all the love and all the appreciation you give, at the same time, expecting them to do well in certain areas of their life. They will learn that there is the responsibility of craft, of doing things well, whatever they are doing; and that there are things in life that are worth doing. Those are the essential parts.
