What we find from the research is that most kids who attempt suicide are struggling with depression or another major psychiatric disorder at the time. It's often overlapped and we can talk about some of the risk factors too. So a child who's coping with depression who then uses drugs or alcohol, which reduces your inhibition and can make you more impulsive, and if they have an access to a firearm, that's a dangerous combination. Depression, alcohol, and access to a gun significantly increases your risk of at least a suicide attempt.

David Fassler, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist practicing in Burlington, Vermont. A graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, he completed his training in adult psychiatry at the University of Vermont, and in child psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He currently serves as clinical director of Otter Creek Associates, a multidisciplinary practice providing comprehensive mental health and substance abuse treatment services.
