It is important to pick a mental health professional with the appropriate training and expertise. But in addition to that, your child needs to get along with them. So it is kind of a combination. I think the parent needs to talk to people in the community and figure out who the competent and qualified clinicians are and then it is really up to the clinician to figure out how to make the connection with the child but even with talented clinicians, it is not always going to be the right fit. And if you are just getting a sense that it is not working or your child is not talking to this person or for some reason doesn´t like this person, it may be time to get a second opinion or think about seeing somebody different.
