The benefits of applying early decision are many for both the college and for the student.  The student gets to chose his or her first choice dream school and make a case to the school that when he or she applies that they are going to go and that is great for the school because the school gets a higher yield and a higher rating from US News and World Report. That decision is binding, however, so if your child is a teen who is on the fence, it's not a good idea. Early action on the other hand, is not binding. Some schools have single choice early action, like Yale, Princeton, Harvard and Stanford which means you also can't apply to an early decision program at the same time. But some schools, like Michigan, are early action, so you could actually apply early decision to Northwestern and early action to Michigan at the same time. But if you got into Northwestern, you'd be going there.
