A good college essay needs to reflect who the child is. They say to bring out your inner 'you', and that does not mean the adult help that the child is getting. So I would make sure your child's essay doesn't have words like 'heretofore' because that's going to be a sure sign that you as a lawyer might have helped in that essay. Your essay, or your child's essay will need to reflect that he or she is an interesting person, a thinker, someone who will bring something to the table in classroom discussions and good writing is only part of the equation, that's not something your child should worry about, because teenagers are overly verbose. And colleges don't want to see lame topics like, "I traveled to Guatemala and saw that everyone there is just as interesting and just as happy as the people in my hometown of Greenwich, CT."
