Talking to my doctor about my son´s food intolerance was actually very difficult. My doctor kept saying that it was colic, and I knew it wasn´t. So we ended up, I probably went to the urgent care twice because after eight hours of crying, I knew there was something wrong. We went to a Pediatric GI and finally he was diagnosed with food intolerance, which is different than a food allergy. So it is even harder to diagnose an intolerance. A food allergy is where your body literally has an allergic reaction. An intolerance doesn´t show up in blood tests. It doesn´t show up necessarily in stool samples. It shows up with mucus in the poop and it shows up in our case with our child being completely uncomfortable and crying all day long. So the only thing that you can do to help in that case is one of two things. You can either put your child on a hypoallergenic formula or you can do an elimination diet, which is what I chose. An elimination diet basically cleans out the mother´s diet because the food that I eat that grows through the breast milk is what affects my child. In my case, it was dairy. But in some cases, you have to eliminate soy, tree nuts, and eggs. And sometimes you have to eliminate everything and then add food in or in my case I did the opposite. I started taking one thing out at a time and it takes about two weeks to clear your body of an allergen in order for you to see results. And I started seeing glimpses of my son, and I knew it was working because suddenly he was present for me a few times a day.
