Female infertility is usually related to three different areas in the woman. The most common factor that creates infertility issue is ovulation. It’s estimated that 30 to 40% of women who are having trouble conceiving is on the basis of just not having a perfect ovulation cycle. And there’s various ways to correct that. The second most common factor for infertility in women is tubal function – the fallopian tubes – the ability of those structures connected to the uterus to pick the egg up properly at the time of ovulation so that fertilization and pregnancy can take place. The third issue relates to the uterine environment – the inside of the uterus. Some women are born with abnormalities separating their uterus in two separate cavities. Sometimes they’re born with an abnormally small uterus. Sometimes as they get older, they form things like fibroids that can affect uterine function. So those are the three most common areas that we look at in the initial evaluation of a woman who is infertile or subfertile.
