Tumblr is a mix between a traditional blog and a traditional twitter, where users are encouraged to share the content that's been posted; whether that's a video, whether that's a picture, or whether that's a piece of content that has been posted. What parents need to understand is, while you can find things like recipes and arts and crafts ideas, a simple search will reveal hardcore pornography, right next to that recipe. If your child is curious and searches within Tumblr using the words, pornography, adult, sex, vagina, they will see images that will, frankly, take your breath away. What parents need to understand is that it may be Tumblr today, but there is no filter on this culture. You can't put software on your computer that will protect your child from this type of content and this culture that is a social free-for-all. As part of being a parent of a digital citizen is making sure that you are monitoring what they are doing online and that you have a conversation with your kids. It's not about saying "no" to technology. It is about saying "yes," but only with your involvement and oversight. Let your kids know that there are age-appropriate sites and steer them towards that.
