Your child should really be an older teen, perhaps a Junior in high school, before they have a Facebook account. Even if Facebook lowered the age restrictions from 13 to younger, at the end of the day, the content and culture inside Facebook would never be rated P or PG. Kids need the opportunity, first, how to use social networking safely and responsibly. They need to understand that it's not okay, no matter what the social networking, to provide your first name, last name, date of birth, IM, email address, your exact physical location. All of those things put our kids and us at risk. After your kids have had the opportunity to show you that they can use the social media for kids and teens responsibly, let them graduate to a Facebook, with your involvement. Then they can show you they can use a great service responsibly.
