When it comes to Facebook and Instagram, a lot of people don't realize that Facebook bought Instagram. That's the first thing.
The second piece is that a lot of people don't realize those privacy policies that you see, those annoying pop-up windows with the really small fonts, if you read that carefully, it basically says that your kid's account and yours too -- but this is mostly about the kids here -- that everything they post on that profile, on Instagram and Facebook; Facebook owns it.
So if they want to delete their profile, things they've said about themselves, pictures, everything; if you look into the privacy policy, it's owned by them. Even if your kid deletes it, they are getting ready for college and applying for jobs, in a goofy moment, posted a picture or made a comment, they wanted to take it off because it doesn't show them in the best light, it's still out there.
Digital is forever, and also, Facebook and Instagram own it. When you are talking to your kids about ground rules, make sure your kids understand this concept.
