The internet can put your child at risk for an eating disorder. There are things called pro-ana, anorexia, and pro-mia, bulimia, sites out there. They come and go on the internet because internet providers are really quite concerned about these messages on these internet sites. They show you how to be anorexic and show you pictures of anorexia. It can be very attractive to a child. I'm not sure what parents can do about it, except to know that it's there. It raises a whole issue about whether parents want to censor what their children do on the internet. I think with my children, from my point of view, it's more about time spent on the internet. Talking about what they are seeing, reading, and paying attention to. Out there on the internet are sites that promote anorexia and bulimia as a lifestyle. That's pretty chilling. That's how deep eating disorders run in our culture.
